THE STORM

by Alexander Ostrovsky, translation by Frank McGuinness

Directed by Michael Sexton

Ostrovsky, who was one of Chekhov’s most accomplished predecessors, sets his tale in a provincial Russian town, where the small-minded egotism of its inhabitants stifles the human spirit.  When an oppressed, married girl falls in love with another man, her desire to breathe freely and consummate their affair unleashes a tempest of guilt, retribution, and grief.

October 1st - 3rd at 8pm, Sunday, October 4th at 2pm and October 5th – 7th, 2009 at 8pm.

The Fifth Floor Theatre 111 2nd Ave., 5th Floor

MUD, RIVER, STONE

by Lynn Nottage

Directed by Kenneth Washington

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions; in this political thriller, an African-American couple from New York lose their way while on vacation in Africa, and stumble into a hostage crisis in a desolate hotel, while the rain relentlessly shuts them—and their fellow hostages—off from the dubious salvation of civilization.  This is the third play we’ve done by Lynn Nottage, who just won the Pulitzer Prize for Ruined.

October 1st - 2nd at 8pm, Saturday, October 3rd at 2pm and 8pm, Sunday, October 4th at 7pm and October 5th- 6th at 8pm.

Atlas Theatre 111 2nd Ave., 3rd Floor

wonder: an American hymn to the shimmer of television and the end of history

by Steve Yockey

Directed by Rachel Chavkin

Place: America. Time: America. An epic solar eclipse marks the end of history and the beginning of "life" as presented on television. While a fledgling Eden tries to bloom in one suburban living room, the desperate memory of something grand savagely bangs on the door. A muted husband, his struggling wife, a terrified single mother, her prescient son, a traveling salesman, a bourbon-soaked radio announcer and everyone at the local television affiliate collide and unravel under darkened skies in this crush of realism, allegory and American myth. [Original NYU Graduate Acting commission]

December 3rd-4th, 2009 at 8pm, Saturday, December 5th at 8pm, Sunday, December 6th at 2pm and 7pm and Monday, December 7th at 8pm.

Atlas Theatre 111 2nd Ave., 3rd Floor

RIFT

by Caridad Svich

Directed by Seret Scott

RIFT is an epic story about lives torn by war and its aftermath, by abuse and damage, profit and trade, and the intimate search for beauty and grace. Gender, border, and culturally crossed, RIFT explores the fate of the human animal in a dislocated world and asks the question: how can a body that is torn find a way to heal itself and transform, and thus resist the tyranny of power? A violent, dream-like erotic fable by award-winning US Latina playwright Caridad Svich. [Original NYU Graduate Acting commission]

December 2nd - 4th, 2009 at 8pm, Saturday, December 5th at 2pm and 8pm, Sunday, December 6th at 7pm.

Shubert Theatre 721 Broadway, 5th Floor

TONGUE OF A BIRD

by Ellen McLaughlin

Directed by Lisa Rothe

Maxine is a rescue pilot—the best in the business, in fact—but finding stranded hikers is easy work compared to the unaccomplished task of finding herself.  A missing girl and her frantic mother awaken in Maxine another journey through the sky:  the skies of her memories, her childhood, and the mother who abandoned her.  In the lyrical fantasia, only when she can touch down with her demons can Maxine ascend to her mission.

February 2nd – 6th, 2010 at 8pm, and Sunday, February 7th at 2pm and 7pm.

Atlas Theatre 111 2nd Ave., 3rd Floor

'TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE

by John Ford

Directed by Jack C. Fletcher

One of the last great revenge tragedies of the Jacobean era, ‘Tis Pity is one of the most provocative dramas of its kind:  think of it as Scarface in blank verse.  In the city of Padua, a brother and sister surrender to their lust for one another; their hot-blooded act of incest sweeps them, and everyone around them, away in a torrent of bloodshed, damnation, and despair.

February 3rd – 5th, 2010 at 8pm, Saturday, February 6th at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday, February 7th at 7pm
The Fifth Floor Theatre 111 2nd Ave., 5th Floor

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

by Moss Hart and George Kaufman

Directed by Emma Griffin

It’s 1928 and talking pictures have revolutionized show business.  A trio of failed vaudevillians Go West to try to make their fame and fortune, but soon discover that in the Fool’s Paradise called Hollywood, only fools make it to the top.  One of the great farces in the American comedy canon; think of it as a satire of Shakespearean dimension:  the Forest of Arden with palm trees.
